Student Password Management

Student Password Management

Protecting our online identities is a vital 21st century skill and an important part of digital citizenship. At Leander ISD, students in grades 6-12 are required to regularly change their network passwords just like LISD staff and just like the educational institutions and workplaces they will be going to after graduation.

Students receive notifications prior to password expiration and are required to update their passwords at that time. They are able to update their passwords from inside or outside the District, on District-owned or personal devices.

Because of the wide variation in how students use technology, they often have questions about the password management process. Common questions include:

How do I change my password?

Go to passwords.leanderisd.org and login with your current password. If you have never been there before, you will be prompted to provide 3 challenge/response questions in case you forget your password and need to recover it later. Then simply click “Change Password” and enter your new password.

After any password change, it is always advisable to synchronize your new password to all applications by locking and unlocking your screen. To do so, simply press Ctrl-Alt-Del, then Lock, then Ctrl-Alt-Del again to login with your new password.

How often do I have to change my password?

Leander ISD secondary students must change their passwords every 120 days. This was determined to be an acceptable balance between not being too frequent that it would disrupt instruction and being frequent enough that students would not forget the process between changes.

What happens if I forget to change my password before it expires?

It depends on what kind of device you are using and how you are using it when your password expires. In some cases, you may simply be prompted to change your password from the login screen. In other cases, you may notice you have been disconnected from the wireless network.

It is always best to change your password promptly when notified that it is expiring.

I can’t connect to LISD-WiFi on my BYOT device (phone, non-mLISD computer, etc) any more. What happened?

This probably means that you did not change your password when you were notified it was expiring. You will have to change your password at passwords.leanderisd.org from another computer or by switching your phone to your cellular network. After the password change, you will be able to connect your personal device to LISD-WiFi again.

I just logged in to my mLISD Lenovo and I am not connected to LISD-WiFi any more. What happened?

This probably means that you did not change your password when you were notified it was expiring. Your computer allowed you to log in with the expired password but the wireless network will not allow that. You can reconnect by clicking the wireless icon on the taskbar and then Disconnect/Connect to LISD-WiFi to change your password.

I changed my password but now I can’t login to my mLISD Lenovo at home. What happened?

This probably means that you did not synchronize your new password by locking and unlocking your screen after the password change. You should still be able to login with the old password. Once you are logged in, confirm you are connected to the District network by successfully browsing the internet, then lock and unlock your screen to synchronize your password. To do so, simply press Ctrl-Alt-Del, then Lock, then Ctrl-Alt-Del again to login with your new password.

I changed my password but now I can’t login to my mLISD Lenovo at school.  What happened?

This probably means that you did not synchronize your new password by locking and unlocking your screen after the password change.  If you are at school, restart your computer and login with your new password.
